Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters

Suggested Retail Price: $55.00
Pre-Pub Price: $34.95

“Anyone interested in the history of interpretation—which today should include all of us—will profit from and appreciate this substantive volume.”

—Dale C. Allison Jr., Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
From Abelard to Zwingli, the history of Christian biblical interpretation has been shaped by great thinkers who delved deeply into the structure and meaning of Christianity's sacred texts. With over two hundred in-depth articles, the Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters introduces readers to the principal players in that history: their historical and intellectual contexts, their primary works, their interpretive principles and their broader historical significance. In addition, six major essays offer an overview of the history of biblical interpretation from the second century to the present.

“I plan to make this volume a mainstay in my History of Interpretation course. . . .”

—Robert W. Yarbrough, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“A major, if not indispensable, resource for biblical interpretation. . . .”

—Patrick D. Miller, Princeton Theological Seminary

“An instructive, thought-provoking, generous-minded, reliable, absorbing, illuminating and imaginative work . . . elegant, entertaining, incisive and provocative.”

—John Goldingay, David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary
This massive reference work by Donald K. McKim, a significantly revised and vastly expanded edition of IVP Academic's Historical Handbook of Major Biblical Interpreters, will serve as an invaluable tool for any serious student of the Bible and the history of biblical interpretation.

Key Features

  • Offers in-depth descriptions of over 200 major Christian interpreters of the Bible
  • Presents six major essays covering the entire history of Christian biblical interpretation
  • Goes beyond the cursory descriptions of other dictionaries of its kind
  • Presents the contributions of each figure in its historical and intellectual context
  • Features a wealth of historical and biographical information in relation to each figure presented
  • Provides an excellent resource for students and teachers of biblical studies, church history and the history of biblical interpretation

Benefits of the Logos Bible Software Edition

The Logos Bible Software edition offers unprecedented access to the history of biblical interpretation. All Scripture references in each article are linked to the Bibles in your library. This means, for example, that when Augustine’s interpretation of Genesis is discussed, you have immediate access to the text. Other advanced search tools allow you to search by subject or topic. By searching for the text of next Sunday’s sermons, you get a quick snapshot of how the key thinkers in the church’s history have read and understood a specific text. That makes the Logos edition more useful than ever for pastors, scholars, and students of the Bible.

Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament

Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament

Retail Price: $39.95
Pre-Pub Price: $26.95

Joseph Henry Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament is one of the greatest achievements in biblical scholarship at the turn of the last century. It was first published during a prolific era of biblical scholarship, and it influenced a generation of preachers, biblical scholars, and translators whose works remain essential for scholarly research and sermon preparation today.
As the culmination of nearly three decades of work, it contains more than 5,000 entries, references to hundreds of grammatical and exegetical works, detailed etymology, and complete summaries of both biblical and extra-biblical word usage.
The publication of the revised edition of Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon in 1889 represents a watershed event in nineteenth-century Greek lexicography, and it remains an important tool for students and scholars of the Greek New Testament more than a century after its first appearance.
Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon is a revised and translated edition of C.G. Wilke’s Clavis Novi Testamenti, which was first published in 1841. After numerous revisions by both Wilke and his successor, C.L. Wilibald Grimm, Joseph Henry Thayer took over the project. Thayer devoted nearly thirty years to the translation—making thousands of revisions based on the latest Greek scholarship. The first publication of Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon appeared in 1885, and an updated edition was published in 1889—the edition available from Logos Bible Software.

Key Features

  • Complete, unabridged text of the 1889 edition
  • Documentation of the historical change of a word’s significance
  • Notes on variation in meaning in the Greek text
  • Detailed discussion of synonyms in the Greek text of the New Testament
  • References to hundreds of grammatical works, commentaries, and exegetical works
  • Hebrew equivalents
  • Etymology
  • Summaries of extra-biblical word usage
  • Draws from Greek texts of the New Testament, plus 340 extra-biblical authors from the ancient world
  • Appendices containing borrowed words, individual words exclusive to individual New Testament writers, helpful compilation of verbs, and more
  • Links to cross-references
  • Fully searchable text
  • All Scripture references in Thayer’s Lexicon are linked to the Greek texts and English translations in your library

Benefits of the Logos Bible Software Edition

Logos makes accessing lexicons like Thayer’s easier than ever. Logos lets you customize your lexicons the way you want. That means you can double-click on any Greek word in any book in your library, and Logos will automatically open Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon to the exact entry you’re looking for. All cross-references within the lexicon itself are linked, which allows easy navigation between different entries. What’s more, the countless references to the Greek text of the New Testament are all linked to the texts in your library, which makes jumping back and forth between the lexicon and your text easier than ever. You can also search across the entire lexicon for a text, which reveals a massive amount of etymological and linguistic information. That makes Logos an essential tool for reading and accessing Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon.
